History & Culture in the Heart of Jutland
History and Culture
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF KINGS
Cultural history is rooted in the heart of Jutland. Once upon a time, we were at the end of the world during the Ice Age, and ever since, Europe has met Scandinavia right here. Denmark was born right here in the heart of Jutland.
We have transformed castles into cultural beacons at the crossroads of history and culture, art and design. Here you will find places with stories so powerful they are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Come and engage with history or meet it with curious fingers. Join us as we turn great stories into living narratives.

Take a journey through time in the footsteps of the kings
Start your time travel with UNESCO World Heritage: Viking fortress Kongernes Jelling (Home of the Viking Kings), where Denmark got its birth certificate.
Continue your journey and lunch like a Viking at Café SEJD, next to Kongernes Jelling, and enjoy the afternoon in the open air with a hike from the large Viking monument to the Ravning Bridge or a visit to the Iron Age Village in Vingsted, part of Vejle Museums (free admission).
Go forward in time. To Koldinghus: what once was one of Denmark's most important royal castles, is now a world-class attraction. Enjoy the 750-year-old royal castle - and check their calendar to not miss any interesting activities. Alternatively, choose other highlights in Kolding, such as UNESCO World Heritage Site Christiansfeld, where you can stay overnight. Here, King Christian VII gave the Herrnhut Church of the Brethren permission to build a town with unique architecture in 1773.
Stop on your way at Skamlingsbanken, between Kolding and Christiansfeld, which plays a role in the birth of the nation-states and drawing the border between Germany and Denmark. A dispute that was not resolved until after World War I.
Finish with a modern sight: Trapholt Museum in Kolding. Trapholt presents a steady succession of exhibitions on art and design, including a large collection of Danish furniture design. Note: The museum reopens in 2027 with even more exhibitions to look forward to.
Come and live the story.
